this set of references belongs to a series of materials i collected for a lecture i gave in kyiv in 2019 titled “on indeterminacy” for canactions, and later on for a design workshop at the iuav of venice in 2022 called “design indeterminacy: structure and device”.
the selected drawings explore the notion of frame and its thematic potential, and present a dense compendium of some core dialectics of modernity:
system/subject, pattern/content, section/plan, division/composition, etc.
far from being exhausted the technique of separation between structure and space definer, isolated by the modernist tradition, demands right now for new interpretations and a substantial reengineering. the constant confrontation with the existing posed by the discipline nowadays almost naturally falls into a structure/device polarisation, where the strategical deployment of the former is the main chance of the project.
this selection describes a spectrum of possibilities, where the boundaries between architecture and design, between space and object are put in tension and sometimes dissolved. the interplay between permanence and transcendence carries here the promise of “opera aperta” embedded in the very premises of the modern.
