the curators asked for drawings that constitute the “ground of your work.” i found this a fascinating way to imagine the relationship between precedents and one’s own creative aspirations. the seven drawings i selected are seven of one hundred or so that have been haunting me for decades. they are omnipresent in my mind. to be honest, i haven’t looked at them in many years as they have been engrained in my mind’s eye, and act collectively like a lens through which i see. configuration, iconography, order and idiosyncrasy, orchestration, logic and irregularity, ambiguity, subtlety... these are some terms i recall when considering these drawings... and stunning beauty, of course.
